Abbeyfield Atholl Society, formed in 1975, is a charity registered in Scotland, No: SC007584 and a registered society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 with charitable status, No: 1847R(S).
Affilliated to the UK body of The Abbeyfield Society, Abbeyfield Atholl Society is an independent Very Sheltered House, as distinct from a Care Home, thus offering accommodation and services to residents capable of living independently.
In Scotland, independent Abbeyfield Very Sheltered Houses and Care Homes voluntarily came together within a co-operative group then described as the Scottish Regional Council, facilitating exchange and representation on matters of mutual interest. In 2012 this group of independent Societies joined up with Abbeyfield Scotland Ltd which previously formed to manage a merged group of Very Sheltered Houses and Care Homes who no longer wished or were able to operate independently. The new 'over-arching' organisation is known as The Abbeyfield Societies in Scotland Ltd, with its own Board of Directors, though remaining affiliated to The Abbeyfield Society's international HQ in St Albans.
